musicOk, so I usually don’t do these “you’ve been tagged, now you have to…” type of webposts or emails.  Why?  because they annoy me.  But this one I just had to respond to because, hey, when it comes to picking obscure music for just the right occasion…I RULE!

Anyway, Tim is the one that tagged me (so go slap him for it j/k), so here it is.  Here are the rules as laid out by the originator, Mark Oestreicher:

scan through your itunes or cd library. refamiliarize yourself with the nooks and crannies of your musical options.
identify five categories — genres, if you will — of music. these should be as obscure and finely-articulated as you’d like. feel free to use modifiers liberally.
nominate — select, really — a “perfect song” for each category. include a link for each song to something (the amazon page for the CD, or the artist’s website, or whatever). you may find it easier, as i did, to find “perfect songs”, and craft categories or genres around them.
ideally, some of the songs will be nominally obscure, or, at least, not completely mainstream and overplayed. no need to tell us all about songs we all know!
I’ve added a few descriptors to my choices, so hopefully, the choices will make a little sense. Also, my entire music collection will never make it to iTunes — it would just take too much time. So, these choices are based on what is there at the moment.

I’m going to modify Tim’s list a little and then add some of my own.  By the way, the links will take you to the iTunes Store so you can buy the tracks too!!  So here is “The list…”

The perfect relationships suck, everybody sucks, and so does life, but I’m not going to stand for it song: “Used to love Her” by G n F’in Roses (Guns and Roses for the lame).  Come on, every time you hear that song you just want to go out a whack someone Soprano’s style!

The perfect why didn’t I stick to my convictions and just become an activist hippy song: “We R in need of a Musicial Revolution” by Esthero  Any song that disses Britney Spears, modern radio, Ashanti, MTV, and the music industry as a whole in one song it a hit in my book.

Best Cruising in the summer with the top down song:  “Radio” by Jurassic 5  This is one SICK jam.  I love J5 and it just doesn’t get better than this.

God’s gift to music: Portishead… any song by these guys.  This band was a major reason why I am still a musician today.  Seriously inspiring stuff!

Best album you’ll never hear:  “The Grey Album” by DJ Danger Mouse.  You will have to go all rogue to get a copy of this album because it’s not for sale.  The RIAA won’t allow it.  It’s a mashup of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles White Album.  Spin and RS (Rolling Stone, see the link above) both praised the album as a major hit.  I’m not going to say if I have a copy or not, but it is the best album I’ve ever heard!!

That’s it for now.  maybe I will post some more music related stuff soon!
